Kicking Off the 37th Annual Ducks Unlimited Band the Billfish Tournament

The docks at Big Rock Landing were buzzing last night as anglers, captains, and conservation enthusiasts gathered for registration at the 37th Annual NC Ducks Unlimited Band the Billfish Tournament. With 49 boats officially signed up, this year’s turnout proves once again that this event is a staple of the summer offshore tournament circuit — and a proud intersection of sportfishing and conservation.

Hosted in the heart of Morehead City, this tournament isn’t just about chasing flags — it’s about raising funds and awareness for waterfowl habitat and wetlands conservation. That’s what makes Band the Billfish different: the mission goes beyond the scales.

But as Day 1 kicks off today, the docks are oddly quiet. Just one boat — yes, one — made the call to fish, leaving the other 48 crews waiting on their weather windows and strategy. It’s a gutsy move, but in a tournament like this, all it takes is one shot to make history.

We'll be following the action all week as boats hit the water, flags fly, and leaders emerge. Good luck and tight lines to the teams fishing this week — and hats off to the one crew already putting lines in the water today. Stay tuned for daily updates and behind-the-scenes coverage, right here on East Coast Saltwater Living.
